Volunteers of America Receives $1.3 Million from The Home Depot Foundation to Provide Homes and Services to Vulnerable Veterans

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Aug. 24, 2020)—Continuing a partnership that has served thousands of U.S. military veterans over the

past decade, The Home Depot® Foundation has pledged more than $1.3 million in new veteran housing grants to Volunteers of America to address the critical needs of former service members. Since beginning its partnership with Volunteers of America in 2011, the foundation has given nearly $19 million to improve housing for veterans and their families.

The latest grants support five Volunteers of America housing programs in four states. This funding will help improve or build 198 affordable and supportive homes specifically for veterans, including at least 37 earmarked for women veterans. Volunteers of America is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit organizations addressing the needs of vulnerable veterans. Nationally, it serves more than 27,000 veterans annually who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness.

Affiliates and housing programs receiving new grants in 2020 from The Home Depot Foundation include:

  • Volunteers of America Florida (“Heritage Place Apartments”): Permanent supportive housing for 14 veterans.
  • Volunteers of America Florida (“Mobile Veterans Home Repair Program”): Home repair program for veterans in Florida with chronic health, disability or financial challenges
  • Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles (“The Barracks”): Permanent supportive congregate housing for 60 male and female veterans in Los Angeles.
  • Volunteers of America Southeast (“Country Club Estates”): New construction of permanent supportive housing for 12 female veterans over the age of 62 in Montgomery, Ala.
  • Volunteers of America Texas (“Veteran Home Repair Program”): Home repair and modification program for 25 veterans with disabilities and their families in Houston.

To date, The Home Depot Foundation has funded 127 Volunteers of America projects that benefit veterans, building or rehabbing more than 5,000 homes for veterans and their families in Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas and Washington. In addition to the grants, Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force, has completed 125 projects to improve Volunteers of America’s veteran housing facilities.
